High Stakes PokerHellmuth is widely considered to be one of the best poker players around, but he’s never immune to having a bit of a bad run and in Season 6 of High Stakes Poker, his run was as bad as it could ever get. Things quickly went from bad to worse as he lost his $200,000 buy-in in just a matter of minutes.

Not a Very Happy Valentine’s for Hellmuth

The first episode of High Stakes Poker aired last Valentine’s Day, allowing everybody (or everybody without a date) to have a peek at one of Hellmuth’s lowest moments. There were eight players in all at the first episode of Season 6, namely Phil Hellmuth, Tom Dwan, Andreas Hoivold, Phil Ivey, Antonio Esfandiari, Gus Hansen, Dario Mineri, and Daniel Negreanu. All of these players spent $200,000 for the buy-in, except for Dwan and Ivey who bought in for $500,000. However, none of these players had as bad a run as Phil Hellmuth did. In his defense, though, the loss was more because he ran out of luck than anything else. Losing $200,000 in just a matter of minutes for Hellmuth was a rather severe case of bad luck, and we can be sure that it damaged his big ego somewhat.

A Series of Unfortunate Events

Hellmuth’s first big loss for the night was actually against the Norwegian player, Hoivold. It happened rather early on in the game, setting a precedent for the other pots that Hellmuth would lose. Phil Ivey, unlike Hellmuth, was having a stellar run and it was actually him who caused much of Hellmuth’s misfortune. There were many incidents wherein Hellmuth had to back down after Ivey showed some aggression, often causing him to lose money inconsequentially. At one time, he had to back down after raising $40,000, causing him to be down by $50,000 early on. Another person who played a part in bringing Hellmuth was Esfandiari. A $104,800 pot was shipped to Esfandiari when Hellmuth found himself at the losing end of the battle when the Turn came up in favor of Esfandiari. Then, once again, it was Ivey vs. Hellmuth as the two of them battled it out with K-9 and J-5, all hearts, with Hellmuth holding the latter. Both of them had flushes, but in the end, it was Ivey who had the better hand, with the river handing him the 10 of hearts. It was then that Hellmuth made his exit, his $200,000 vanishing within the span of just a few minutes.
